If you live in St. Louis then there’s no better time of year than baseball season! I’m a St. Louis Cardinals fan and have been since I was a kid. I still remember my first time in Busch Stadium back in 1983. I remember being in awe at the size of the stadium and of course there was the hope that I would catch a fly ball. Sitting in the upper deck our chances were slim to none but that didn’t dampen my spirits. I was there, softball glove in hand, just in case. I never caught a fly ball but baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals would be forever in my heart.
These glasses are a crowd pleaser and add fun to any event! After all, who doesn’t like glitter and baseball? I’ll walk you through the steps for creating your own favorite baseball wine glass.
Materials:
Clean Wine Glass
Vinyl (Cut into the stripes on a baseball)
Sponge Brushes
Thin Paint Brush
White Enamel Paint
Red Enamel Paint
White Glitter
Red Glitter
Clear Acrylic Sealer (Mod Podge or Krylon)
First, clean your wine glass with soap and water and dry completely. You also want to wash the outside of the glass using a rag and rubbing alcohol to make sure there is no remaining soap film.
Take your clean wine glass and apply the vinyl stripes on the foot of the glass. Make sure the vinyl is pushed all the way down and there are no bubbles. This will keep the white paint from bleeding under the vinyl.
Next, using your sponge brush and enamel paint, paint the foot of the glass making sure to cover the vinyl and sides of the glass. Take your white glitter and immediately sprinkle the foot, covering all of the white paint and then shake off the excess glitter. Place a piece of paper under your glass so you can catch any glitter and recycle. In my experience using enamel paint is better than latex when painting and glittering glass. The enamel will stick permanently to the glass and will yield a better result when pulling the vinyl off to reveal the baseball stripes. It also helps the glitter adhere to the glass.
Next, using a cuticle clipper or some other grasping instrument, pull the vinyl stripes off the foot of the glass while the paint/glitter is still wet. Don’t allow the paint to dry on the vinyl as it will make it stick to the glass and make it difficult to remove. This will reveal the baseball stripes as well as provide a guide when adding the red paint and glitter. Let the white paint/glitter dry completely (if you don’t let it dry your red glitter will stick on the white paint). Drying time for enamel is usually several hours.
After the white paint/glitter is completely dry you can start painting the stripes of the baseball. Using a thin paintbrush and red enamel paint, carefully follow the design of the stripes and add the red glitter immediately after the paint. Allow the red paint/glitter to dry completely. When the red paint/glitter is completely dry it’s time to seal the glass. Apply 2 coats of the spray seal to the glitter, allowing the glass to dry between applications. The seal will allow the foot of the glass to get wet when washing. These glasses are hand wash only and should not go into the dishwasher. After the seal is dry you’re able to decorate the bowl of the glass with you favorite team. GO CARDS!
I absolutely love the glass! I am a huge Cardinals fan too. Hoping for a win tomorrow!
